Dear Mountain Partnership Members and Friends,

We have the pleasure to announce the launching of our strategically redesigned Mountain Partnership Website: http://www.mountainpartnership.org/

This new website includes, among others, the following features:

·         “Regions in action” blog, enabling our decentralized hubs to post news and articles from the regions
·         “featured member” section, changing with each refresh page, giving visibility to members
·         A reserved area exclusively for members, comprising:
o   An electronic Forum for strategic discussions involving all members
o   “resources” page to download meeting documents
o   Opportunity to comment on blog postings
o   Direct access to member data to autonomously update information
·         Social media linking to our Flickr and YouTube channels
·         “Focus Areas” page, enabling easy search of contents throughout the website, according to thematic tags

2nd Annual Utah High School Essay Report


On March 30, 2012, The Utah International Mountain Forum (UIMF) held at the Orem Public Library, the Second Annual Utah High School Workshop and Essay Contest on the topic of the “Sustainable Energy for Mountain Communities”, in support of the United Nations initiative to declare 2012 as the “International Year of Sustainable Energy for All.” This event was co-sponsored by the Utah Valley University’s History & Political Science Department and the Aspen International Mountain Foundation (AIMF).

UIMF President Visits UN and State Department


In preparations for the Utah Valley University and Utah International Mountain Forum (UIMF) participation at the United Nations RIO+20 conference on sustainable development On June 20-22, 2012, and co-hosting the Conference on women’s issues, sustainability, and conflict in the Andean region in Puno, Peru, the President of the UIMF John McClure visited the United Nations headquarters in New York and the State Department in Washington D.C. on March 5, 2012.

Second Annual Utah Students Workshop: Sustainable Energy

The second annual Utah Students Workshop and Essay Contest will take place on Friday, March 30, 2012 from 2-6 PM in the Story Telling wing of the Orem Public Library

2:10pm – 2:20pm - Greetings from Dr. Rusty Butler, Focal Point of the U.N.-related
Mountain Partnership (MP) at Utah Valley University
2:20pm – 2:30pm -  Remarks from John McClure, President of Utah International Mountain
Forum (UIMF) at UVU
2:30pm – 4:00pm - Presentation of the best 10 research papers by high school students
4:00pm – 4:10pm - Greetings by Skype from Rebecca Wallace, Aspen International
Mountain Foundation, member of the MP.  
4:10pm – 4:50pm - Presentation of the best 10 research papers by high school students

and Jesler Molina. Awards and certificates of appreciation to the winners are presented by representative of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Focal Point of MP at UVU and President of UIMF.
5:20pm – 5:30pm - Presentation of certificates of appreciation to all participants and
organizers of the Workshop (same individuals are involved as in the previous ceremony)
5:30pm – 6:00pm - Reception

Dear Mountain Partnership Members and Friends,

With reference to the message below, please note that the deadline for submission of proposed changes to the “Zero Draft” has been postponed to 29 February 2012.

We will be circulating a revised paragraph 94 (the one directly related to mountains) based on comments received from many of you, which you may wish to use in your submission.

We very much look forward to continue working together to have mountains properly reflected in the Rio+20 Outcome.

Promoting Utah's membership in the Mountain Partnership

John McClure, President of Utah International Mountain Forum (UIMF) and Dr. Baktybek Abdrisaev, Advisor of UVU Foreign Affairs meet with Vice President Val Hale to bring attention to the Utah Joint Senate Resolution 019. The draft of the Resolution has already been co-sponsored by Utah State Senator John Valentine, who is famous for his support of building closer ties between state of Utah and mountain communities in Central Asia.

UIMF Issues a Call for High School Papers


UIMF in connection with UVU has issued high school essay contest in recognition of 2012 as the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All. The aim of this UIMF essay competition and workshop is to reach out to the high school students of the region and inform them of the energy problems that exist in mountainous regions around the world. An additional aim is to  suggest how they might become part of the global mountain community working on these issues under the umbrella of the United Nations sponsored agenda of Sustainable Mountain Development. 

A panel of judges will read submissions and select finalists to present their papers at the workshop. A monetary prize will be awarded for the top three papers. All participants (schools, professors & students) will be awarded by special certificates of participation on behalf of the United Nations-related Mountain Partnership in Rome, Italy.
